Sorry for the lack of updates, I’ve been preparing hard for my OSCP next week.
During this, I happened to think of one thing, one thing that I would say would be the most important to anyone looking to get into not only this, but IT in general. Obviously, there are any number of things that could be said by any number of people. For me though, only one thing came to mind.
Learn Linux.
But why? It’s not like many people use it right? If you’re thinking in terms of using it at work, or for personal use, you may be right in that regard. But, everyone comes into contact with it everyday. AndroidOS is simply modified Linux. Apple operating systems? Based off of Unix, which Linux is derived from. The cloud? Ran by Linux servers. IoT devices such as almost every smart device, are modified Linux. Networking equipment? The same. So, even if you do not interact with it directly, it is all around you in things you use daily. If that wasn’t reason enough, in IT, chances are you will run into it at some point. I could also make the argument that knowing Linux helps you to become more comfortable with the command line, configurations, programming, scripting, how background processes actually work, etc.
Finally, and this reason may be the most compelling. Cost. The only thing it costs to learn Linux and begin using it is simply your time. If given a choice between sacrificing a little time and learning this much, with so many possibilities being opened in return, and not doing it… Well, I’d choose the time sacrifice every time.
